Novacrofters Abu, Jo, Priti and Charlotte share their insight into transport careers
For over a year now we’ve been working with Transport for London to inspire a generation, as a supporter of their 100 Years of Women in Transport (YOWIT) Campaign and its legacy.
The 100 YOWIT campaign celebrated women working in transport, past and present, and has now moved to legacy, becoming the Women in Transport programme, and looking to the future.
We’re delighted to be part of that legacy, which profiles the roles of Novacrofters Jo, Priti and Charlotte and features Abu, a Novacroft Development Team Lead, in two launch films (watch film one here and film two here) as part of a toolkit to inspire the transport trailblazers of tomorrow.
The transport industry is ‘exciting, [with] endless possibilities’ says Jo Phelps, our Head of HR, while Business Analyst Priti loves the way transport has such close links with reality, and Contact Centre Advisor Charlotte is committed to sharing her knowledge and providing the very best in customer service.
The shortage of women in STEM careers, with women making up just 12.8% of the UK STEM workforce, is a key driver behind TfL’s work, and Novacroft CEO and Founder Debra Charles is keen to promote the transport industry to young people, raising awareness of the variety and excitement a career in transport can offer:
Public transport is the backbone of this country’s economic growth, and the next generation of transport and technology trailblazers need to be inspired and passionate to ensure it continues to be.
The Royal Academy of Engineering forecasts that we’ll need 100,000 new STEM graduates every year until 2020 to meet the demands of all the transport projects in the UK, and we’re currently producing just 90,000 a year. So I believe it’s critical to forge better links with boys and girls coming through the education system, and to capture their imaginations with insights into the incredible variety of careers on offer in the industry before they make their subject choices.
